Years 5 & 6 Long Term Plan

Welcome to Years 5 & 6

These years are an exciting time for our children. We focus on developing skills and independence in the core subjects and across the whole curriculum.

We also have lots of exciting experiences for the children, such as residential visits and projects.

Reading is something we love to do and we really hope you can share this experience with your child. Each child will take an Accelerated Reader assessment to match books to their comprehension level. They will then bring home an age appropriate Accelerated Reader book relevant to their reading level/interest level/age.

We ask you to foster this love of ‘Reading for Pleasure’ at home through offering books/comics/non-fiction texts that your child is interested in and discuss with them how they are progressing on Accelerated Reader.

School Diaries

Pupils can use their diaries so that they can record books read, which page they are on and what they thought about the book.

We aim to make pupils more independent during their time in Oak Class by encouraging pupils to use their diaries more as ‘planners’ to be more organised in readiness for secondary school.

Homework

Spellings will be given out each week on a Monday and children will be tested on these the following Monday. You will find your child’s spellings within their Home School Diary. We ask that children practise their times tables a minimum of 3 times a week and that children are listened to read at least three times a week for a minimum of 10 minutes. There will also be an additional maths homework activity each week (set Friday to Friday). Homework is always a consolidation activity based upon current class learning (nothing new!)

Uniform

We pride ourselves on our uniform. Children should all come to school wearing full school uniform: a grey blazer, a Marton tie, black, white or grey socks, flat, black shoes with a strap or laces, black or grey trousers/skirt and a white shirt or blouse.

On P.E days, children should have a white P.E. top, shorts/jogging bottoms and trainers or plimsolls.

Class Dojo

Class Dojo is used to share learning that takes place in school. We will regularly post pictures of work or activities that the children get up to. The platform also gives you the opportunity to share your children’s achievements and independent learning they do. These are wonderful opportunities for your child to present to class about what they have learnt or achieved outside of school. These moments promote great discussion around the subject area.

Religious Education

We use NATRE RE to compliment our Religious Education curriculum. Parents and carers should be aware that they have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE teaching. Please speak to Mr Green should you wish to discuss withdrawing your child.
