Welcome to Years 3 & 4

These are important years for children in their holistic development. We focus on developing social skills and embracing the whole curriculum; core and foundation subjects.

This year, we cover the following topics:

  • The Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age
  • Ancient Egypt
  • Forces and Magnets
  • Rivers
  • Plants
  • Exploring the UK

We have lots of exciting experience for the children, such as residential visits, projects and themed days in school.

Reading is something we love to do and we really hope you can share this experience with your child. We have incorporated this into our curriculum and use ‘book studies’ regularly in reading and composition lessons. We ask you to listen to or read to your child as much as you can and write a note in their diary to tell us about their experience and understanding. Each child will take home a Lexile book that they have chosen. At The Marton Academy, gaining enjoyment from reading is really important to us, therefore each week the children choose a book from the library that particularly interests them. Children are given time in school to read for pleasure and staff share their love for reading with the children.

Home School Diaries

These are used to communicate between parents and teachers. The staff in class will check the children’s diary regularly. Please write a note when your child has read and any other comments you would like to share. The more reading you do with your child, the better! When they have read, please ask them questions about what they have read to make sure they understand the text.

Homework

Spellings will be given out each week on a Monday and children will be tested on these the following Monday. You will find your child’s spellings in their Home School Diary that they will stick in each week. We ask that children practise their times tables a minimum of 3 times a week and that children are listened to read, each day, for a minimum of 10 minutes. There will also be an additional ‘Fluent in Five’ maths activity each week (set Friday to Friday).

Uniform

We pride ourselves on our uniform. Children should all come to school wearing full school uniform: a grey blazer (Y4), a Marton tie (Y4), Marton sweatshirt (Y3), black, white or grey socks, flat, black shoes with a strap or laces, black or grey trousers/skirt and a white shirt or blouse. On P.E. days, children should have a white P.E. top, shorts/jogging bottoms and trainers or plimsolls.

Class Dojo

Class Dojo is a fantastic tool for you to see what we get up to in school. We will regularly post pictures of activities children have enjoyed and share what they look forward to doing. The platform also gives you the opportunity to share your children’s achievements an independent learning they do. These are wonderful opportunities for your children to present to the class about what they know or have learnt.
